The Barnes Foundation houses one of the world's finest collections of early French modern and post-impressionist paintings. As a result, the property is indeed a museum and endures a regular flow of traffic and tourists.

Tour buses, visitor traffic and small residential streets combine to create challenges for this 57 car parking lot. Synterra, Ltd. was responsible for designing the parking lot that would be unobtrusive and inconspicuous.

The final design sited the lot near the existing gallery on a clearing behind an existing greenhouse. The final installation is out of the site line of visitors and the adjacent residential homes.

As part of the Arboretum's initiative to restore the grounds to their original landscape design, the lot was landscaped to mesh with legacy plan.

Synterra's landscape designers selected plant material to supplement and accent the existing horticultural collection. All mature trees and their root systems were preserved to ensure the character of the grounds remained intact. The result is a solution that fulfilled all functional needs, relieved street congestion, and blended aesthetics with durability -- ideal for an organization with busy groundskeepers already.

Pre-construction measures were developed to ensure tree survivability during construction.
