Synterra, Ltd. provided landscape, open space and master planning consulting
services for the redevelopment of five hundred and twenty-two (522) acres
on the east side of the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
The site was defined by four districts; Gateway, Historic Core, Marina
and East End. Synterra, Ltd. developed an open space system that includes
new parks, streetscapes, plazas, trails, and existing green spaces in
the Historic Core, recreational facilities, landscape areas and natural
areas. The open space system included parks of different sizes, programs
and purposes.
The open space plan unified the different areas of the site making effective
connections, establishing places for people and restoring the natural
system of the site. The open space master-plan changed the character of
the Navy Yard from an industrial site to a more people oriented community.
