Synterra, Ltd. was responsible for the site and landscape design of US
Airways International Terminal One at Philadelphia International Airport.
Situated among natural wetlands, the site was designed to capture the
essence of the original landscape while functioning as a gateway to the
airport building complex. To create a natural environment, indigenous
plant material created a smooth transition from the adjacent wetlands
to the dramatic gateway entrance -- a woody slope with a tumbling rockscape
and colorful herbaceous plants simulates a landmark waterfall in the Wissahickon
area.
Directly in front of the building, planting beds with native material
were arranged in a more formal manner to compliment and soften the building
facade. Trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials were chosen to
provide color and seasonal interest.
Elsewhere, extensive use of meadow grasses provides an informal "undesigned"
appearance that is practically maintenance-free.
